MARTIN LOCKETT
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it. Find Your Purpose, Become Unstoppable. Lions are leaders, not followers. I will become whatever I Believe I will become. Surround Yourself with those that are Hungry for Success Martin Lockett is the Director of Cultural Engagement at Lines for Life, a substance abuse counselor, author, public speaker, and youth mentor. He spent 17.5 years in prison for a DUI fatality that claimed two lives and severely injured another. In an impassioned vow to his victims’ families and friends at his sentencing, Lockett devoted the rest of his life to honoring his victims’ legacies by helping others who struggle with substance abuse issues and mental health challenges.
While incarcerated, Martin earned a BS in sociology, MS in psychology, and served as a role model to other inmates. It was during this educational and reflective process he was able to unravel his own youthful motivations that led him down the treacherous path of addiction and criminality. He then leaned into his formal education and life experience to mentor young inmates and help transform their thinking, leading them toward a better path. He acquired state certification as a substance abuse counselor, published two books (Prison to Purpose Pipeline and My Prison Life), and began sharing his story at DUI victim impact panels all within the prison setting.
Three years removed from prison, Lockett continues his mission and message by helping youth and young adults who are beginning to head down the wrong road and those who may need counseling services for mental health and substance use issues. He provides hope by sharing his powerful story of redemption at DUI victim impact panels, alcohol highway safety classes, high schools, colleges and conferences across the country.
